Could your house have arrived by train from the Goldfields?
A hundred years ago it wasn’t unusual for workers’ cottages and shop buildings to be dismantled in regional towns, loaded onto trains, and rebuilt in suburbs like Victoria Park, where housing was in high demand.
The movement went both ways too. Some Victoria Park homes were later relocated elsewhere. Newspapers of the time were filled with advertisements for houses for removal, while hopeful buyers placed “wanted” ads in search of affordable homes to relocate and rebuild.
