Junior Kindy

The Library’s junior kindy collection contains books, games and resources appropriate for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers, including board books, picture books, early readers, puppets, jigsaw puzzles, audiobooks, children’s DVDs and music CDs.

Junior Fiction

The library stocks an eclectic array of fiction titles from Australian and international authors, from picture books and early chapter books, to comics and novels. Fiction works are also available in other languages or printed in Dyslexia-friendly font.

Junior Non-fiction

The library stocks popular junior non-fiction titles by Australian and international authors in a range of genres to help primary-age students with research for pleasure, homework and school projects. There is a wide range of topics, including biography/autobiography, mythology, world religions, world cultures, science, natural and built environments, animals, world history, Australian history, IT, popular culture, games, art, craft, music, movies, sport, literature and so much more!

First Steps Collection

The Library’s First Steps Collection supports children who are learning to read. The steps are age and ability-appropriate and are designed to gradually increase a child’s reading confidence. Each title is allocated a coloured sticker to indicate reading level.

Blue

Single letters and VC (at, in, on) and CVC (bat, sit) words

Words with two or more letters that are the same (tell, bell)

May contain some high frequency words (the, to, I, no, go)

Red

Word with sounds represented by more than one letter (ck, sh, ch)

Single syllable words with common long vowels CVCe (bake, bike, bone, cute)

Words with common Suffixes such as -ing and -ed (jumped, jumping)

CCVC and CVCC words (sh-o-p, b-e-s-t)

Green

Words with vowel digraphs (ee, oo, ay, ai, ea, oa, ow) – two letters making one sound

Two-syllable compound words - two or more words that have been grouped together to create a new word (desktop, shellfish, carpark, farmyard)

Yellow

CCVCC words (trust), CCCVC words (scrap), CCCVCC words (street, strap)

r-controlled vowel combinations (ar, er, or, ur, ir)

phonic generalisations - soft c (recent, cell) and soft g (gentle)

long e:

e – be, vegan

e-e – eve, here

ie – chief, believe

ee – see, street

ea – eat, leaf

ei – ceiling, protein

ey – key, honey

y – candy, every

Purple

Alternative spellings

Multisyllabic words, including those with prefixes and suffixes (in-, ex-, dis, -ful, -able, -ly)

Words with silent letter (kn, mb)

Junior Language Collection

The library’s junior English as a second language and foreign language collections contain language books and resources appropriate for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers in over 20 languages. 

Young Adult Collection

The library stocks popular young adult fiction titles by Australian and international authors and books that are trending on Booktok. A selection of audiobooks and magazines suitable for teenagers are also located in the Young Adult area.

Parenting Collection

The library’s parenting collection contains popular and informative non-fiction titles on raising and caring for children and teenagers, and is located in the Junior section of the library.
